UAE participates in Arab League’s Economic and Social Council

The UAE participated in the ministerial session for the Economic and Social Council of the Arab League, held in Cairo, Egypt on July 21.

The meeting is a preparatory session preceding the regular 31st session of the Arab League Summit, which will be hosted by Algeria in November.

According to state news agency WAM, the Emirati delegation was led by Juma Mohammed Al Kait, Assistant Under-Secretary at the UAE Ministry of Economy for Foreign Trade Affairs, on behalf of Abdullah bin Touq Al Marri, Minister of Economy.

During the session, Al Kait pointed out that the UAE is keen to share its pioneering experience in establishing the foundations of advanced and sustainable action mechanisms to enhance the economic cooperation and integration of Arab countries, through proactive policies and strategies.

The UAE also highlighted its initiatives to advance the process of joint Arab action to higher levels in future economic sectors with a focus on three key areas, including the Arab vision of the digital economy.

The UAE also launched a range of pioneering programmes to train qualified Arab cadres to lead the space sector and support Arab cooperation in space sciences.

The UAE then presented its innovative project, the ‘Regulations Lab’, to present a creative approach to making a change, by drafting regulations on emerging technologies and implementing them with the cooperation of executive authorities, the private sector, innovators and entrepreneurs.

The meeting addressed several key issues listed on its agenda, including the progress made in meeting the requirements of the Greater Arab Free Trade Area, the establishment of the Arab Customs Union, ways of promoting cooperation in the digital economy and ensuring Arab economic growth after the pandemic.

Meanwhile, the Arab League, in cooperation with the UN Environment Program and the Center for Environment and Development for the Arab Region and Europe, launched the Arabic edition of the 6th Global Environment Outlook. The report presented the basics of global environment reporting and explored the importance of the key findings about the region. Food security, digital economy, space cooperation are some of the topics to be discussed in the upcoming Arab League Summit in Algeria.
