The UAE Cabinet has endorsed the setting up of the UAE National Institute for Medical Specialisations (dubbed the UAE Medical Board) to develop and upgrade the country’s healthcare sector, official news agency WAM reported.

The move was first proposed and adopted during the UAE Cabinet retreat in December last year, which focused on overhauling the country’s education system.

The WAM report quoted the UAE’s VP and PM and Dubai’s ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum as saying that that all the proposals adopted during the brainstorming sessions have become part of the Cabinet agenda, with government agencies starting to implement them.

The new UAE Medical Board will help upgrade medical cadres through “continuous training in cooperation with national and international educational institutions,” he said during a Cabinet session on Sunday.

During the session, the Cabinet also approved the restructure of the UAE University and Zayed University’s board of directors.

Sheikha Lubna Al Qasimi, UAE’s Development and International Cooperation minister has now been appointed as the chairperson of Zayed University.

Sheikh Mohammed said that the next priority for the boards of both the universities will be to “raise their level globally, strengthen their academic role and develop future research and studies that benefit the community,” WAM said.

A number of educational initiatives were announced and endorsed by the Cabinet during its recent retreat, including the launch of a system to evaluate schools and publish detailed reports on their academic performance to increase competitiveness.

An academic guide system was also announced to help students choose future academic specialisations that match the requirements of the national economy.
