In August last year, the Camera and Imaging Products Association (CIPA) noted startling figures regarding DSLR and compact cameras. It said that compact camera shipments were down 88.2 per cent year-on-year while DSLR shipments were down 56.8 per cent in June 2019 compared to June 2018.

One of the reasons for the declining market share of compact cameras and DSLRs can arguably be attributed to the smartphone market, which is now dominated by a hand full of players raising the bar with their smartphone capabilities.

One such dominant smartphone company, OPPO, is set to launch its new photography-focused Reno3 series devices in the UAE this week.

The Reno3 Pro flagship device has Quad camera setup at the rear of the device. It includes a 64MP ultra-clear primary camera, a 13MP telephoto lens, an 8MP ultra-wide-angle lens that is capable of capturing 109-degree photos and a 2MP mono lens.

The primary camera, ultra-wide-angle and telephoto lens combine to offer 2x optical zoom, 5x hybrid optical zoom and up to 20x digital zoom.

By toggling into Expert Mode on the device, the primary camera is configured to shoot 108MP ultra-high-definition images. That allows you to view the precise settings of the ISO, white balance, autofocus, shutter speed and exposure value – further confining the DSLR into the realm of ‘has-been’ devices.

Furthermore, the phone boasts of an ultra-dark mode (automatically activated in poor lighting conditions).

Front cameras were notoriously an afterthought on most mobile devices, that isn’t the case with the Reno3 Pro though. The dual punch-hole camera consists of a 44MP ultra-clear primary camera and a 2MP depth of field lens. Since most front cameras are used for selfies, OPPO has included the ultra-night selfie mode that uses AI and high dynamic range imagining to allow for crisper, brighter shots in low-lighting selfie conditions.
